And the answer is...maybe!  The authors adjusted for age and gender (page 108 - 109, Statistical Analysis), but not other risk factors such as smoking or LVH. Nevertheless, this is not a fatal flaw, and most readers would accept this article as valid despite this limitation, given the otherwise strong design.
