Connection to the Internet

We have done our best to keep the graphics and other elements to a reasonable size.  A 14.4 kb connection is a minimum, but we recommend a 28.8 kb or higher connection to the Internet.

Browser requirements

To participate in the Web-based course you need a Web browser which supports frames, such as Netscape version 3.0 or higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher.  These browsers are available for both the MacOS, Windows 3.1, Windows '95/'98/NT

Changing the display size

We highly recommend setting the display to 800 x 600 pixels.  However, most computers are configured out of the box to display 640 pixels ('dots') horizontally by 480 pixels vertically.  By resetting your display to 800 x 600 pixels, you can put about 50% more information on the screen at one time, while maintaining a very legible typeface size.

To change your display size if running Windows '95:

  1. Move the pointer arrow with the mouse over a blank part of the "desktop" background, and press the right mouse button.  Alternately, press the Start button, and select "Settings" and then "Control Panel".  You can then double-click on "Display" to get the same dialog box.
  2. Select the "Settings" tab at the top of the dialog box by clickingonce on that tab.
  3. In the section labeled "Desktop area", it probably says "640 x 480".  If it already says "800 x 600", you're done.   If not, click between "Less" and "More" until it says "800 x 600".
  4. Select "OK" to confirm your changes.  Some video cards will make you restart the computer after making this change, but that usually isn't necessary.

That's it!
